Health and Safety policy
Health and Safety Policy for Man and a Van Holland Park
Man and a Van Holland Park is committed to providing removals and transport services in a manner that safeguards the health, safety and welfare of our employees, contractors, customers and members of the public. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety across all aspects of our operations, including domestic and commercial moves, packing, loading, transport and unloading activities.
Policy Statement and Objectives
We recognise our duty to comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and to follow industry best practice for moving and handling goods. Our objective is to prevent injury, ill health, damage to property and harm to the environment by identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing effective control measures for every removal project we undertake.
Health and safety considerations are integral to planning and delivering our services. All employees are expected to support this policy, follow safe systems of work and take personal responsibility for their own safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions.
Management Responsibilities
The management of Man and a Van Holland Park has overall responsibility for ensuring that effective health and safety arrangements are in place. This includes:
Ensuring that this policy is implemented, communicated and reviewed regularly. Providing appropriate resources, equipment and training to maintain safe working conditions. Assessing risks associated with lifting, carrying, loading, driving and site access, and putting in place appropriate control measures. Monitoring compliance with safe working practices and taking corrective action where required. Encouraging a positive safety culture where staff are confident to raise concerns and report hazards or near misses.
Employee and Contractor Responsibilities
All employees and contractors working with Man and a Van Holland Park share responsibility for maintaining safe standards of work. This includes:
Cooperating with management on all health and safety matters. Following instructions, training and safe systems of work at all times. Using vehicles, lifting equipment and personal protective equipment correctly. Reporting accidents, incidents, near misses and unsafe conditions as soon as possible. Taking reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by what they do or fail to do.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Before starting any removal or transport task, we consider the nature of the work, the items to be moved and the characteristics of the collection and delivery locations. Where necessary, a documented risk assessment will be carried out. We pay particular attention to:
Manual handling hazards associated with heavy, bulky or awkward items. Access routes, stairs, lifts, narrow corridors and parking arrangements. The condition of floors, external paths and loading areas, including slip and trip risks. The potential for contact with members of the public and other contractors on site. Weather conditions that may affect safe loading or unloading.
From these assessments we define safe systems of work, including staffing levels, equipment requirements and step by step handling methods suited to the property and items being moved.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is a key part of removal work. To reduce the risk of strain and injury we:
Provide training in correct lifting and carrying techniques. Encourage the use of team lifting and mechanical aids such as trolleys, dollies and straps whenever feasible. Plan the route for moving items to minimise twisting, reaching and carrying over long distances. Refuse to move items that are unsafe to lift or cannot be handled without unacceptable risk.
All handling equipment is checked regularly for defects and used only for its intended purpose. Any damaged or faulty equipment is removed from service until repaired or replaced.
Vehicle Safety and Driving Standards
Our vehicles are maintained in a roadworthy condition and are suitable for the loads carried and the areas in which we operate. Drivers must hold the appropriate licence, follow all road traffic laws and demonstrate safe driving behaviour at all times.
We ensure that loads are distributed correctly, secured to prevent movement and covered where necessary to avoid loss of items while in transit. Drivers are expected to carry out basic checks, report defects promptly and not drive any vehicle they believe to be unsafe.
Customer and Public Safety
We plan our work to reduce disruption and prevent risks to customers, neighbours and the wider public. This includes managing parking and vehicle movements safely, keeping access routes clear wherever possible and using warning signs or barriers where there is a risk of trips, falls or contact with moving loads.
We take care to protect property, fixtures and fittings and we communicate clearly with customers about any safety precautions they may need to observe while the removal is in progress.
Training, Information and Supervision
Man and a Van Holland Park provides appropriate information, instruction and training so that staff can carry out their duties safely and competently. This may include induction training, on the job guidance and refresher training in manual handling, vehicle safety and use of equipment.
Supervision is proportionate to the level of risk and the experience of the individuals involved. Less experienced staff work under the guidance of more experienced colleagues until they demonstrate the necessary competence.
Accident Reporting and Investigation
All accidents, incidents and near misses that occur in connection with our removal services must be reported to management as soon as possible. We keep appropriate records and investigate incidents to establish causes, identify trends and implement measures to prevent recurrence.
Where required, we will cooperate with any external investigations carried out by enforcing authorities or property managers.
Review and Continuous Improvement
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes to our operations, legislation or industry guidance. Feedback from employees, customers and other stakeholders is welcomed as part of our commitment to continual improvement.
By working together and following this policy, Man and a Van Holland Park aims to ensure that every move is carried out safely, efficiently and with full regard for the wellbeing of everyone involved.
